THE DREAM IS COMING TO AN OFFICE NEAR YOU, SUPPORT US!

by juan ◊ 647 days ago 3 Comments Switch View

A couple of months have gone by, and it gives me great pleasure to say how proud I am of the efforts and results this project has yielded thus far. The Dream Is Coming started as a collaborative effort between several immigrant youth groups across the United States, with the intention of putting the Dream Act at the forefront of the immigration debate. Since then, we have undertaken several actions that have drawn national attention and have drawn various endorsements from various leaders and supporters across the country.

In May, we staged a sit in at Senator John McCain’s office in Tucson, Arizona. Those 4 students now face deportation proceedings.

Last month we had sit ins in the congressional offices of Senators Schumer, Menendez, Feinstein, Reid and McCain to show once again that immigrant youth are “Undocumented and Unafraid” to stand up for the Dream Act! This upcoming Thursday, August 12th, those 21 students who staged the sit in will travel back to Washington DC for their court appearance.

Last Thursday, thanks to the efforts of some of the members of this very same project we managed to help a young mother from Arizona, Marlen Moreno, who faced a deportation order to be served yesterday August 8th. She now has been granted deferred action and will remain in the country for another year.

Today, we had an article published in the New York Times about our efforts and the fight that we continue to engage in to secure the passage of the Dream Act this year.

As we continue to develop and coordinate more future actions, we encourage those who like and support our work to please consider making a small donation to our cause. All of our actions and events are funded by your donations, or the pockets of activists and immigrant youth alike.

Thank you for your visiting our site and taking part in the fight for the passage of the Dream Act!

My name is Judith Rayo. I was born on May 6,1993 to Carmen Mojica and Nicolas Rayo. We lived in Acapulco Mexico and the small town of Geraro. I have two sisters and six brothers. Out of all by brothers and sisters only two finished high school and only one of my sisters has been to college. My parents, one brother and I lived in a one room house. We had a bathroom that was located outside.. Growing up in Mexico was a struggle. My mom and dad worked very hard to finish high school. My Mom did sewing for people and my dad worked at whatever jobs he could find. Although my parents worked very hard there were many things that we could not have. The most important thing that I did have was many wonderful friends. I feel that the first reason I stand out is that I have great courage. When I was nine years old my mom made the decision to come to the United States. We were told that life would be better for us here. It was a very risky decision and required us to walk through the desert for four days and three nights. We saw many horrible things along the way and had very little food to eat. We drank water out of a pond that had dead animals along it’s banks. We also saw dead people. We were hungry, scared and close to giving up.We did not sleep very much and even when I did I heard every little noise around us. Death was always on my mind. The second reason that I feel I stand out is that I have great strength. Having survived crossing the desert took great strength for a nine year old. It has shown me that anything is possible if you are willing to sacrifice to achieve it. Any challenge that is given me I find a way to accomplish it. I won’t give up until I do. The third reason that I feel I stand out is that I have a great appreciation for the freedom that this country has to offer. America has so many opportunities for people. I am proof of that. When I came here at nine years old I did not speak any English. I have been on the honor roll each year since I came here and last year I was second in my class. I have also received perfect attendance for every year that I have been here. I have worked very hard to take advantage of the great opportunities here and to make my family proud of me. Courage, Strength and Appreciation represent who I am.
